History of Punta Gorda
A Fishing & Boating Community
Ponce De Leon was just one of the early Spanish settlers to find
their way to Punta Gorda Florida in the 1500s.
The name, Punta Gorda, means Fat Point. Fat Point
describes the geographical features of Punta Gorda, which juts out into
Charlotte Harbor.
In the late 1800s, Isaac Trabue bought hundreds of acres of land in
Punta Gorda in anticipation of the Florida Southern Railway Expansion.
It was the Railway back then that has made Punta Gorda what it is
today. All thanks to Isaac Trabue.
Today, Punta Gorda is the only incorporated city in Charlotte County.
